Nice Column

When I was in grade school in the 1950s my teacher made us read an article about the word nice. The author claimed nice was overused. Everything was nice, he complained. Have a nice day. Be a nice boy. Wasn't that a nice movie? Nice, nice, nice. He was a nice man, and he wanted everyone to stop using nice all the time. He said nice no longer had meaning. I can't say for sure what happened, but his article must have been part of an anti-nice movement, because nice ceased to be a factor in our lives.
